通信業界では仕様ができてからそれが普及するのにまたひとやまあり、使われない仕様も多い。そこで、無線ＬＡＮチップベンダのWi-Fi Directのサポート状況を調べてみた。

AtherosはROCmをWifi Directの対応とした。2009後半にXSPANとAlignもWifi Direct対応する。

Q: How does the recent Wi-Fi Alliance announcement of the Wi-Fi Direct specification relate to Intel® My WiFi Technology?
A: Intel® My WiFi Technology was the industry’s first commercially available Wi-Fi PAN solution and it is based on the common Wi-Fi standards and specifications that are currently available, such as 802.11abgn, WPA/WPA2, WMM, and Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). Wi-Fi Direct is a new specification being developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance and will bring new consumer ease of use, power management, and enterprise capabilities to Wi-Fi PANs. Intel My WiFi Technology will incorporate this new specification as it becomes available. Both My WiFi Technology and Wi-Fi Direct solutions connect with already shipped Wi-Fi CERTIFIED(tm) devices allowing the 100s of millions of devices already shipped to take advantage of these new solutions.
まとめ
無線ＬＡＮチップメーカのWi-Fi Directへの態度をまとめると、Atheros、Marvellはサポート済み、intelはサポート予定、Realtekは言及なし、となります。
次は機器ベンダーがWi-Fi Directをどう見ているか調べると面白いと思っています。ただ、Wi-Fi DirectはデジカメやＰＤＡのようなガジェット類のための規格であるため、デジカメメーカがWi-Fi Directのために無線ＬＡＮを乗せるかというと、可能性が薄いと思います。可能性があるとすればEye-FiがWi-Fi Directを乗せてくることだと思う。
Eye-Fiの無線ＬＡＮチップはAtherosのROCmのようなので、チップとしてはWi-Fi Directをサポート済みです。一方、Eye-Fiのビジネスモデルからすると、Wi-Fi Directは彼らの儲けを減らす可能性があるため、Eye-Fi がWi-Fi Directをサポートするときは、新しいビジネスモデルとセットということになるでしょう。
